Four years after the already very successful “Day To Day Dream” album, Valerie Ghent is back with her fourth solo record, recorded in the south of France and New York with excellent musicians (Pierre Sibille on the French side, percussionist Bashiri Johnson and singer Alfa Anderson on the US side, among others). Therefore it’s no surprise we find a sophisticated musical atmosphere in her completely original repertoire, in the style of Brenda Russell/Valerie Simpson (Ghent’s longtime patron) who characterize the previous album. If the ballads and the elegant mid-tempo songs are clearly her strong point – the beautiful Love Divine opener, the intense Light in My Life, or Linger, with its beautiful string arrangement, are the proof. At the same time Ghent is not afraid to vary styles and is very comfortable with funk grooves such as It’s Got to Be You or the Al Jarreau-style song, New York City Streets, even if the reggae/rock of Phased (Reggae) is less convincing. Quatre ans après le déjà très réussi “Day To Day Dream”, Valerie Ghent est de retour avec son quatrième disque personnel, enregistré entre le sud de la France et New York, avec un groupe de pointures (Pierre Sibille côté français, le percussionniste Bashiri Johnson ou la chanteuse Alfa Anderson côté US, notamment). Sans surprise, on y retrouve, sur un répertoire totalement original, l’ambiance musicale sophistiquée à la Brenda Russell / Valerie Simpson (sa patronne de longue date) qui caractérisait l’album précédent. Si les ballades et les tempos moyens élégants sont son point fort évident – le très beau Love divine en ouverture, l’intense Light in my life ou Linger, avec son bel arrangement de cordes, en sont la preuve –, Ghent ne craint pas de varier les styles et se montre très à l’aise dans le funk It’s got to be you ou le titre à la Al Jarreau New York City streets – même si le reggae rock de Phased (Reggae) est moins convaincant. L’ensemble confirme sans hésitation que Valerie Ghent est une des artistes à suivre de la scène soul indépendante ! FRÉDÉRIC ADRIAN
